Facts About Rats
One of the most common types of Rat is the 'Norway Rat' (also known as the Brown rat, or Sewer Rat). These Rats are generally brown in colour and can be anywhere between 13 to 18 inches long including the 6 inch tail.
Rats will eat nearly any type of food, but they prefer good quality foods including meat and fresh grain. They also have a great sense of taste, smell and importantly for them, hearing. Rats are also extremely good swimmers and can swim up through floor drains and even toilet-bowl traps.
When breeding, Rats can produce litters of of 5-12 pups, anywhere between 3-7 times per year. Young Rats reach reproductive maturity within 3 months of being born and they are most active for breeding during Spring and Autumn time. Most Rats die before they are 1 year old.
Like Mice, the real harm from Rats is contamination which can be transmitted to people by breathing dust which has been contaminated by Rat droppings, urine, or saliva. Each Rat can leave between 20-50 droppings per day making them a noticeable pest to any home or commercial property.
